Print Friendly and PDF

As teenagers, it’s important for us to explore and deepen our faith in God. We often find ourselves seeking answers, purpose, and a meaningful connection with our Creator. In today’s Sunday school lesson, we will dive into Luke 2:22-40, where we encounter two faithful individuals, Simeon and Anna, who provide us with valuable lessons on growing our faith.

Let’s explore the significance of this passage and discover how it can impact our lives.

Bible Reading: Luke 2:22-24

“When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, ‘Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord’), and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: ‘a pair of doves or two young pigeons.'” (Luke 2:22-24 NIV)

Explanation:

  • In the Jewish culture, it was customary for parents to present their firstborn son to the Lord and offer a sacrifice of purification.
  • This act demonstrated obedience to God’s law and dedication of the child to God.

Bible Reading: Luke 2:25-35

“Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:

‘Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.’

The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: ‘This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.'” (Luke 2:25-35 NIV)

Explanation:

  • Simeon was a righteous and devout man who believed in the promise of the Messiah’s coming.
  • The Holy Spirit had revealed to Simeon that he would not die before seeing the Messiah.
  • Simeon recognized Jesus as the Messiah and praised God for fulfilling His promise.
  • Simeon also prophesied about Jesus’ role in the salvation of humanity and the challenges He would face.

Bible Reading: Luke 2:36-40

“There was also a prophet, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.” (Luke 2:36-38 NIV)

Explanation:

  • Anna, a prophetess, dedicated her life to worshiping God in the temple.
  • She recognized Jesus as the Redeemer and shared this revelation with others who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.

Youth Group Game: “Faith Seekers Scavenger Hunt”

Divide into teams and provide each team with a list of items to find or tasks to complete related to faith, such as finding a verse about hope, sharing a personal testimony, or locating a cross symbol. The team that completes the most items within a given time wins the game.

Closing Prayer:

Dear God, we thank you for the faithful examples of Simeon and Anna. Help us to grow in our faith, to patiently wait for Your promises and to worship You wholeheartedly. May we be inspired by their devotion and commitment to seek You in all things. Guide us as we navigate our teenage years, and help us to deepen our understanding of who You are and how we can live out our faith in practical ways. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Remember, growing in faith is a journey that requires dedication and seeking after God. Let’s continue to explore His Word, pray, and support one another as we strive to grow in our relationship with Him. Stay encouraged, and may your faith continue to flourish!
