Print Friendly and PDF

As teenagers, you are at a critical stage in your faith journey. It’s a time when you’re discovering who you are, facing challenges, and making important decisions. The story of Mary and Joseph in Luke 2:15-21 reminds us that faith is not just for adults; it’s for young people too. This passage teaches us valuable lessons that can help us navigate our own faith journeys and grow closer to God.

Bible Reading: Luke 2:15-16

“When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.’ So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.”

Explanation:

  • The shepherds, after hearing the angel’s message, felt compelled to go and see for themselves what had happened.
  • They acted on their faith and were rewarded with the sight of the newborn Savior.
  • Mary and Joseph, as obedient servants of God, welcomed the shepherds and shared the joy of Jesus’ birth.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  1. Have you ever experienced a moment when you felt compelled to seek God or learn more about Him? Share your experience.
  2. How do you think Mary and Joseph felt when the shepherds arrived? Can you imagine their joy and amazement?
  3. What can we learn from the shepherds’ response to the angel’s message? How can we apply it to our own lives?

Bible Reading: Luke 2:17-18

“When they had seen Him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.”

Explanation:

  • The shepherds couldn’t keep the news to themselves; they shared it with others.
  • Their testimony amazed those who heard it, spreading the message of Jesus’ birth even further.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  1. Why do you think the shepherds felt compelled to share the news about Jesus’ birth?
  2. How can we follow the example of the shepherds and share the good news of Jesus with others?
  3. Have you ever shared your faith with someone? If so, what was the outcome?

Bible Reading: Luke 2:19

“But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.”

Explanation:

  • Mary, as Jesus’ mother, held onto the memories and testimonies surrounding His birth.
  • She reflected on these things, deepening her understanding and strengthening her faith.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  1. Why do you think Mary chose to treasure and ponder these events in her heart?
  2. How can we develop a habit of reflecting on our own experiences with God?
  3. Share a time when you felt the need to reflect on your faith journey. What did you learn from that experience?

Youth Group Game: “Faith Journey Relay”

Divide into teams and set up a relay course with stations representing different stages in a person’s faith journey (e.g., hearing the gospel, making a decision to follow Jesus, growing in discipleship, sharing faith). Each team member will complete a task at each station before passing the baton to the next teammate. The first team to successfully complete the relay wins!

Closing Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for the example of Mary and Joseph and their unwavering faith in You. Help us to have hearts like Mary, treasuring and pondering the moments when we experience Your presence in our lives. Equip us to share the good news of Jesus with others, just as the shepherds did. Guide us on our own faith journeys and strengthen our relationship with You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
