Hey everyone! Question for you—have you ever had a big assignment or test coming up, but you left it until the last second to prepare? Maybe you said, “I still have time!” only to realize you didn’t have as much time as you thought. That moment of panic hits hard, doesn’t it?

Today, we’re talking about something Jesus said about being ready—not for a test, but for His return. Luke 21 is all about staying spiritually alert. Jesus talks to His disciples about the future—some crazy, scary stuff like signs in the sky and things going wrong in the world. It sounds intense, but here’s the good news—He tells us exactly how to be ready.

For you, as teenagers, life can be busy with school, activities, and friendships. It’s easy to get so caught up in today that you forget about forever. This passage reminds us that Jesus is coming back, and He calls us to live in a way that’s alert, hopeful, and focused on Him.

Grab your Bibles and an open heart—it’s about to get real!

📖 Bible Reading #1 – Luke 21:25-28

“There will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time, they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

🔍 Explanation

  • Signs in the Sky: Jesus tells us that the world is going to experience some wild and chaotic events before He returns—things that grab everyone’s attention.
  • Fear vs. Hope: While many people will be scared, Jesus tells us to stand tall and look up. Why? Because, for believers, these signs mean that something amazing is happening—our redemption is near.
  • Jesus, the Son of Man: He’s not coming back quietly this time. Jesus will return with power and glory! This gives us hope, no matter how messy or scary the world gets.

🤔 Discussion Questions

  1. Jesus says to “stand up and lift up your heads.” Why do you think it’s important to approach His return with confidence instead of fear?
  2. Do you see anything in today’s world that reminds you of what Jesus is describing here?
  3. What can give you peace when you think about scary or uncertain times?

📖 Bible Reading #2 – Luke 21:29-33

“He told them this parable: ‘Look at the fig tree and all the trees. When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.’”

🔍 Explanation

  • The Parable of the Trees: Jesus uses a simple example—trees budding in spring—to show us how to recognize the signs of His return. It’s like an alarm clock saying, “Get ready!”
  • The Kingdom Near: The Kingdom of God isn’t just some far-off idea. Jesus tells us it’s close—it’s breaking into our world as these signs happen.
  • God’s Unshakable Word: When life feels unpredictable, Jesus reminds us we can trust Him. His Word is permanent, unchanging, and true.

🤔 Discussion Questions

  1. Why do you think Jesus used a tree as an example? How does it help us understand His return?
  2. What does it mean to you that Jesus’ words will “never pass away”?
  3. How can we live like the Kingdom of God is near today?

📖 Bible Reading #3 – Luke 21:34-36

“‘Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap. For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth. Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.’”

🔍 Explanation

  • The Stakes Are High: Jesus warns us to be careful with how we live. He says distractions, sins, and even regular life struggles can weigh us down and make us unprepared for His return.
  • Stay Awake: Spiritually speaking, we need to stay alert, keep watch, and not get too comfortable with life as it is.
  • Pray for Strength: Jesus says we should pray to stay strong and stand confidently before Him. That’s how we prepare—through prayer and living for Him daily.

🤔 Discussion Questions

  1. What are some things in everyday life that could distract us from focusing on Jesus?
  2. Why do you think prayer is such an important part of being ready for Jesus’ return?
  3. How can we encourage each other to stay spiritually alert?

🎉 Youth Group Game – “On Watch”

Objective:

This game is a fun way to remind us to stay alert—and test how good we are at focusing!

How to Play:

  1. Pick one player to be the “Watcher” who faces away from the group.
  2. The rest of the group stands behind the Watcher, and their goal is to move as close as possible without being caught.
  3. The Watcher can turn around suddenly at any moment. If they catch someone moving, that person has to go back to the starting line!
  4. The first player to touch the Watcher wins and becomes the next Watcher.

Debrief After the Game

  • How easy or hard was it to stay focused on the goal?
  • How does this game relate to staying “on watch” spiritually?
  • What can help us stay focused on Jesus with all the distractions around us?

🛠️ Reflect and Apply

  • Think about one thing that might be distracting you from focusing on Jesus (like social media, stress, or procrastination). This week, take a small step to spend more time with God instead.
  • Commit to praying every day for God to help you stay spiritually alert and ready for His return.
  • Share with your group something you’re looking forward to about Jesus’ return.

🙏 Closing Prayer

“Lord, thank You for reminding us of how important it is to stay spiritually alert. Thank You for giving us signs and promises that show Your return is coming. Help us not to be afraid, but to live with hope and expectation. Keep distractions, fears, and temptations from pulling us away from You. We ask for strength to live faithfully and to reflect Your love to those around us. We can’t wait to see You, Jesus! Amen.”

The takeaway? Jesus is coming back—and that’s something to get excited about! Stay watchful, stay hopeful, and live in a way that shows He’s your focus. Remember, being ready for Jesus isn’t about being scared—it’s about living with purpose and joy, knowing the best is yet to come!
