Youth Ministry Lesson on Ephesians 2:11-22: Unity and Identity in Christ

Print Friendly and PDF

Hey everyone! Today we’re diving into a super important topic that’s all about unity and identity in Christ. As teenagers, you’re navigating a world that’s constantly telling you who you should be and where you belong. But what if I told you that Ephesians 2:11-22 gives us a rock-solid foundation for understanding our true identity and unity as followers of Jesus? Let’s explore how being united in Christ can change the way we see ourselves and treat others.

Bible Reading: Ephesians 2:11-13

“Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called ‘uncircumcised’ by those who call themselves ‘the circumcision’ (which is done in the body by human hands)— remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.”

Explanation

  • Gentiles and Jews: Paul is talking about the division between Jews and Gentiles. Back then, these groups were like oil and water—they just didn’t mix.
  • Separated from Christ: Without Jesus, we’re all separated from God, just like the Gentiles were.
  • Brought Near: Through Jesus’ sacrifice, everyone—no matter who they are—can be close to God.

Discussion Questions

  1. Have you ever felt like an outsider? What was that like?
  2. How does knowing that Jesus brings us all together change the way you see others?

Bible Reading: Ephesians 2:14-16

“For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.”

Explanation

  • Jesus is Our Peace: Jesus doesn’t just bring peace; He IS our peace.
  • Destroyed Barriers: Through His death, Jesus took away the barriers that separate us, making us one.
  • New Humanity: Jesus’ purpose was to create unity and peace, bringing us all together as one family in God.

Discussion Questions

  1. What barriers do you see in your school or community that separate people?
  2. How can you be a peacemaker like Jesus in those situations?

Bible Reading: Ephesians 2:17-22

“He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.”

Explanation

  • Preaching Peace: Jesus’ message of peace is for everyone, no matter how far away they feel.
  • Access to the Father: Through Jesus, we all have direct access to God.
  • Fellow Citizens: We are part of God’s family, no longer outsiders but insiders.
  • Holy Temple: Together, we are a spiritual building where God lives.

Discussion Questions

  1. What does it mean to you to be a part of God’s family?
  2. How can we, as a youth group, help each other feel more united in Christ?

Youth Group Game: “Unity Challenge”

Instructions

  • Set Up: Divide the group into teams and give each team a set of building blocks (like LEGO).
  • Goal: Teams must work together to build the tallest tower they can in 5 minutes.
  • Twist: Every minute, one team member is blindfolded, and the rest must guide them.
  • Debrief: Discuss how working together and guiding each other is similar to how we support each other in our faith.

Closing Prayer

Dear God, thank You for bringing us together through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to break down any barriers that divide us and to see each other as brothers and sisters in Your family. May Your peace fill our hearts and guide our actions. Help us to live out this unity and identity in our daily lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
