Print Friendly and PDF

Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Introduction: Why This Matters for Your Faith Journey

Life can be unpredictable, especially as a teenager. Between school, friends, and future decisions, it can feel like things are constantly changing, and you don’t always have control. This lesson is about learning how to trust God even when life feels uncertain or overwhelming. Proverbs 3:5-6 gives us a roadmap for what it means to rely on God with our whole heart, rather than trying to figure everything out on our own.

Trusting God when we don’t have all the answers isn’t easy, but it’s an important part of growing in your faith. Let’s explore what it means to trust Him in every aspect of life, even when it’s difficult to understand what’s going on.

Bible Reading: Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • This verse tells us to put our full trust in God, not just when things are going well, but especially when we don’t understand what’s happening.
  • “Leaning on your own understanding” means trying to figure things out on your own or relying only on what you know. But God sees the bigger picture.
  • When we submit our plans, worries, and decisions to God, He promises to guide us and make our paths clear.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • What does it mean to trust God with all your heart? How is that different from trusting Him with just part of your life?
  • Why do you think it’s hard to trust God when things aren’t going the way you expected?
  • Can you think of a time when you trusted God in a difficult situation? How did it turn out?

Bible Reading: Matthew 6:25-27

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Jesus reminds us here that worrying doesn’t change anything, but trusting God does. God knows exactly what you need and will take care of you.
  • If God takes care of birds and all of creation, how much more will He take care of you, His child?

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • What do you worry about the most in your life right now? How does this passage challenge those worries?
  • How can trusting God with your everyday needs change your perspective?
  • What are some practical ways you can stop worrying and start trusting God more?

Bible Reading: Philippians 4:6-7

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Anxiety and worry are common struggles, but this passage gives us a blueprint for dealing with them: bring your concerns to God through prayer.
  • When you pray and give thanks, God gives you peace that goes beyond what makes sense in your situation. That peace will protect your heart and mind.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • What are some things that make you feel anxious or stressed?
  • How does praying about your worries help you trust God more?
  • What does “the peace of God” mean to you? Have you ever experienced that peace in a tough situation?

Youth Group Game: “Trust Walk”

  • Objective: Build trust and reliance on others while learning how to depend on God in uncertain situations.
  1. Divide the group into pairs. One person in each pair is blindfolded, and the other is the guide.
  2. The guide must lead the blindfolded partner through an obstacle course (either inside or outside) using only verbal instructions—no touching allowed.
  3. After everyone has completed the course, switch roles so everyone gets a turn being both the blindfolded and the guide.
  4. Debrief: After the activity, talk about what it felt like to trust someone else completely and how this relates to trusting God in uncertain times.

Bible Reading: Jeremiah 29:11

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • God has a good plan for your life, even when it doesn’t seem like it. He knows the future and wants to bring you hope and success.
  • When things seem confusing or stressful, you can trust that God’s plan for you is bigger and better than anything you could plan on your own.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • What does this verse tell us about God’s character and His plans for us?
  • How does knowing that God has a plan for your life help you trust Him more?
  • When have you had to trust God with your future? How did that impact your faith?

Closing Prayer

Let’s close in prayer:

“Father, thank You for reminding us that we can trust You in all circumstances, even when we don’t understand what’s happening. Help us to lean on You and not our own understanding. Teach us to bring our worries to You in prayer and to trust that You have a good plan for our lives. Give us peace that surpasses all understanding, and help us to walk by faith each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

This lesson is designed to encourage teenagers to trust God in every aspect of their lives, especially in uncertain times. It’s practical and engaging for their age group, helping them grow their faith.
