Introduction: Why Generosity and Following Jesus Matter for Teens

Teen life is full of choices about what matters most—friends, social status, money, and even your personal time. Luke 19 teaches us that following Jesus changes the way we live, including how we treat others and share what we have. Learning generosity and putting God first now sets up lifelong habits of faith and character.

Bible Reading 1: Luke 19:1-10 (Zacchaeus the Tax Collector)

“Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through when a man named Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector, tried to see Him. He was short in stature, so he climbed a sycamore tree. Jesus looked up and said, ‘Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.’ Zacchaeus welcomed Him gladly. Many people murmured, ‘He’s gone to be the guest of a sinner.’ Zacchaeus stood up and said, ‘Lord, I will give half my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone, I will pay back four times as much.’ Jesus said, ‘Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son of Abraham.’”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Jesus sees you: No matter what others think, Jesus knows your heart and wants a relationship with you.
  • Generosity is a response to grace: Zacchaeus’ giving showed his changed heart after meeting Jesus.
  • Transformation matters more than reputation: God cares about who you are becoming, not just what people say about you.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • Why do you think Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus even though he was rich and respected in society?
  • How does generosity show that your heart is changed by God?
  • What’s one area of your life where you need to let Jesus transform your choices?

Bible Reading 2: Luke 19:11-27 (Parable of the Ten Minas)

“Jesus told this story because He was near Jerusalem: A nobleman went to a distant country to be appointed king. Before leaving, he gave ten of his servants a mina each and told them to put it to work. When he returned, he asked for an account of their efforts. Some had doubled their minas; others had done nothing. The nobleman praised the faithful servants and rewarded them, but the one who did nothing was punished. Jesus said, ‘For everyone who has will be given more, but from the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away.’”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Use what God gives you: Your talents, time, and opportunities are gifts to grow and share, not to waste.
  • Faithfulness matters: Small efforts done consistently please God and have big impact.
  • Risk vs. comfort: Sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone to follow Jesus fully.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • What gifts or abilities has God given you that you could use for Him?
  • Why do you think it’s easy to “play it safe” instead of using your gifts?
  • How could taking small steps of faith lead to bigger opportunities for God’s work?

Bible Reading 3: Luke 19:28-44 (Jesus Enters Jerusalem)

“Jesus went on toward Jerusalem, approaching Bethphage and Bethany. He sent two disciples to fetch a colt for Him to ride. As He approached the city, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully praising God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen, saying, ‘Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Some Pharisees in the crowd told Him to rebuke His disciples, but Jesus said, ‘If they keep quiet, the stones will cry out!’”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Bold faith: Don’t be afraid to show your love for God, even when others criticize or misunderstand you.
  • Celebration of God’s work: Recognize and rejoice in what God is doing in your life and in the world.
  • Living courageously: Following Jesus sometimes means standing out from the crowd, and that’s okay.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • What does it look like for you to boldly praise God in your daily life?
  • Have you ever felt criticized for following Jesus? How did you respond?
  • Why is it important to celebrate God’s work, even in small ways?

Youth Group Activity: “Generosity Challenge”

Objective: Practice generosity and bold faith in small, practical ways.

Materials: Paper, pens, and envelopes.

Instructions:

  1. Each teen writes down one way they can serve or give this week (time, talent, money, encouragement).
  2. Share ideas with the group and pray over them.
  3. Challenge them to follow through during the week and share their experience next meeting.

Key Takeaways for Teens:

  • Meeting Jesus changes hearts, not just actions.
  • Generosity reflects God’s love in tangible ways.
  • Faithful use of your gifts leads to greater impact for God’s kingdom.
  • Following Jesus may require boldness, courage, and celebration of His work in your life.

Closing Prayer:

“Lord, thank You for showing us how to live generously, use our gifts, and boldly follow You. Help us put our faith into action, celebrate Your work, and trust You to transform our hearts. Give us courage to serve others and shine Your light every day. Amen.”
