Sunday School Lesson: Wisdom Begins with Worship – Solomon’s Request 1 Kings 3

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

As Solomon begins his reign in 1 Kings 3, he doesn’t ask for riches, power, or fame—he asks God for wisdom. This chapter teaches us what true leadership and maturity look like: starting with worship, seeking wisdom, and caring for others more than ourselves.

1. Bible Reading: 1 Kings 3:5–10

“The Lord appeared to Solomon… and said, ‘Ask for whatever you want me to give you.’ Solomon answered, ‘Give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong.'”

Explanation For Teenagers

Solomon could have asked for anything. But instead of thinking only about himself, he asked for something that would help others.

Wisdom isn’t about being smart—it’s about understanding how to do what’s right in God’s eyes.

When we start with worship and humility, we learn to make better choices.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think Solomon asked for wisdom instead of something more selfish?
  • What does this story show us about how to pray?
  • What’s one area in your life where you need God’s wisdom right now?

2. Bible Reading: 1 Kings 3:11–14

“So God said to him, ‘Since you have asked for this… I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart… Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both wealth and honor.'”

Explanation For Teenagers

God was pleased with Solomon’s unselfish request—and He blessed him even more.

This is a reminder that when we seek God first, He takes care of the rest.

Living with wisdom helps us not only lead well, but also grow in our relationship with God and others.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • How can we focus on what matters most in our prayers?
  • What do you think it means to have a “discerning heart” today?
  • Who’s someone in your life that shows godly wisdom? What can you learn from them?

Youth Group Activity: “Wisdom Choices”

What You’ll Need:

  • Scenario cards with tough choices teens might face

How to Play:

  1. Students read a scenario aloud and talk about what a wise response would be.
  2. After discussion, each student writes a prayer asking God for wisdom in a real-life situation.

Debrief

  • What makes it hard to choose what’s wise?
  • How can we rely on God when we don’t know what to do?
  • What’s one way you’ll seek God’s wisdom this week?

Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You for offering us wisdom when we ask. Help us to want the things that please You. Teach us to lead, love, and live with discernment. May our hearts be humble and open to Your direction. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
