Sunday School Lesson: God Is Sovereign and Faithful – Romans 9:1-33

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters for Teens

Teenagers ask big questions: “Is God fair?” “Why do bad things happen?” “Does my life really matter?” Romans 9 tackles hard truths about God’s sovereignty, human responsibility, and trust. This chapter reminds teens that God is always faithful, always just, and always working—even when we don’t fully understand His ways. This lesson helps students grow a mature faith that trusts God instead of trying to control Him.

What I’ve Learned about God’s Faithfulness

Oftentimes, as Christians, when bad things happen, we question whether God cares or if He is even there at all. But when we look back later, we can see His hand at work and how He really is sovereign. If we even look back and cannot see how this could be used for good, we can trust that He will use it for good because He told us He will and He has been faithful in the past. – Micah K

Bible Reading 1: Romans 9:1-5 (God’s Heart for His People)

“I speak the truth in Christ—I am not lying, my conscience confirms it through the Holy Spirit—I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • God cares deeply: God’s plan is never cold or heartless.
  • Faith is personal: Being around God’s people doesn’t automatically mean trusting God.
  • Brokenness matters: God grieves when people reject Him.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • Why is it important to know God actually cares?
  • Can someone grow up in church and still miss faith?
  • How should believers respond to people who reject God?

Bible Reading 2: Romans 9:6-13 (God’s Promises Never Fail)

“For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel… it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • God keeps His word: God’s promises are never broken.
  • Faith is not inherited: Everyone must personally trust God.
  • God chooses with purpose: His plans are intentional and wise.

  • Why is it good that God’s promises don’t depend on people?

“What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all!”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • God is always just: God never does wrong.
  • Grace is mercy, not entitlement: No one earns salvation.
  • God’s mercy is powerful: Salvation is a gift, not a paycheck.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • Why do people struggle with the idea of God’s fairness?
  • What’s the difference between fairness and mercy?
  • Why is grace better than getting what we “deserve”?

Bible Reading 4: Romans 9:19-24 (The Potter and the Clay)

“Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • God is the Creator: We are shaped by Him, not the other way around.
  • Humility matters: Faith grows when we trust God’s wisdom.
  • God’s plan is bigger: Our lives fit into a much larger story.

“I will call them ‘My people’ who are not My people; and I will call her ‘My loved one’ who is not My loved one.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • God welcomes outsiders: No one is too far gone.

Bible Reading 6: Romans 9:30-33 (Righteousness by Faith)

“They did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were by works… The one who believes in Him will never be put to shame.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Faith saves: Salvation comes by trusting Jesus, not trying harder.
  • Jesus is the foundation: He is either the cornerstone or a stumbling block.
  • Belief brings confidence: Faith removes shame and fear.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • Why do people prefer earning over trusting?
  • How can religion become performance-based?
  • What does real faith look like for a teenager?

Youth Group Activity: “Clay and Trust”

Objective: Help teens understand surrender and trust in God’s plan.

Materials: Modeling clay or Play-Doh.

Instructions:

  1. Give each student a piece of clay.
  2. Ask them to shape something while holding it tightly.
  3. Then ask them to loosen their grip and reshape it.
  4. Discuss how surrender allows God to shape us.
  5. Pray together, trusting God as the Potter.

Key Takeaways for Teens:

  • God is always faithful and just.
  • Salvation is based on faith, not effort.
  • God’s mercy is wider than we imagine.
  • Trusting God leads to peace.
