Sunday School Lesson: David and Goliath – Facing Giants with Faith 1 Samuel 17:45-47

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Have you ever faced a situation that felt way too big for you to handle? Maybe it’s a huge test, a big challenge in your personal life, or something scary that seems impossible to overcome.

David was just a teenager when he stood up to Goliath—a trained warrior and a literal giant. But instead of letting fear take over, David trusted God and faced his giant with faith. This story teaches us that no challenge is too big when we trust in God’s strength rather than our own.

1. Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 17:45-47

“David said to the Philistine, ‘You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head… All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.'”

Explanation For Teenagers

Goliath looked unbeatable—he was bigger, stronger, and more experienced in battle than David.

David didn’t focus on how big Goliath was—he focused on how powerful God is.

Sometimes, our problems feel like giants, but like David, we can trust that God fights our battles when we put our faith in Him.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What “giants” are you facing in your life right now?
  • How can you remind yourself to focus on God’s power rather than your fears?
  • Why do you think David was so confident even though he was young and inexperienced?

2. Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 17:48-50

“As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell face down on the ground. So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone.”

Explanation For Teenagers

David didn’t hesitate—he ran straight at Goliath. His confidence wasn’t in himself but in God’s power.

God didn’t give David a sword or armor—He used something simple (a sling and a stone) to show that the victory belonged to Him.

God can use whatever you have, no matter how small, to help you overcome your challenges.

Lord, thank You for the story of David and Goliath and for showing us that no problem is too big for You. Help us to trust You in the face of our fears and to stand strong in faith, knowing that You are with us. Give us the courage to face our challenges, just like David did. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
