Print Friendly and PDF

Teenagers today face countless challenges, distractions, and temptations. It’s crucial for us to be rooted in our faith and understand what God expects of us as His children. Studying Psalm 50:7-15 is an excellent way to learn about the kind of relationship God desires with His people. This lesson will help us grow our faith by exploring God’s expectations, how to offer genuine worship, and how to call upon Him in times of need.

Bible Reading: Psalm 50:7-15 (NIV)

7 “Listen, my people, and I will speak; I will testify against you, Israel: I am God, your God. 8 I bring no charges against you concerning your sacrifices or concerning your burnt offerings, which are ever before me. 9 I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens, 10 for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. 11 I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are mine. 12 If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it. 13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats? 14 Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High, 15 and call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”

Explanation:

  • God is speaking to His people, reminding them that He is their God and they should listen to Him.
  • He doesn’t have any complaints about their sacrifices and offerings, but He wants them to understand that these are not what He truly desires.
  • God owns everything – the animals, birds, and insects. He doesn’t need their sacrifices to provide for Himself.
  • God wants His people to offer genuine thanksgiving and fulfill their vows, rather than focusing solely on rituals and ceremonies.
  • In times of trouble, we should call upon God, and He will deliver us, leading us to honor Him.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What do you think God is trying to teach His people in this passage? How does this apply to our lives today?
  2. How can we offer genuine thanksgiving and worship to God? What does it look like in our daily lives?
  3. What does it mean to “fulfill your vows to the Most High”? How can we honor our commitments to God?
  4. How can we rely on God during difficult times and allow Him to deliver us?

Youth Group Game: “Thankful Charades”

  1. Divide the group into two teams.
  2. Each team will take turns acting out a scene or situation that demonstrates thankfulness without using any words.
  3. The other team will have one minute to guess what the scene represents.
  4. Teams will earn points for each correct answer.
  5. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

This game will help reinforce the importance of genuine thankfulness and give the youth a fun, interactive way to explore the concept.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for teaching us about Your expectations and desires for our relationship with You. Help us to grow in our faith and offer genuine thanksgiving and worship to You in all aspects of our lives. Guide us in honoring our commitments to You and leaning on Your strength during difficult times. We pray that our hearts will always be open to Your guidance and wisdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
