Sunday School Lesson: Overcoming Temptation – Jesus in the Wilderness Matthew 4

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Matthew 4 shows Jesus being tempted by the devil in the wilderness. Instead of giving in, Jesus fights back with Scripture. His example shows us how to stand strong in temptation and rely on God’s Word to make wise choices.

1. Bible Reading: Matthew 4:1–11

“Jesus answered, ‘It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’… ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’ Then the devil left him.”

Explanation For Teenagers

Jesus faced real temptations—physical, emotional, and spiritual. But He used truth to stand firm.

Temptation is not a sin—but how we respond to it matters. God gives us strength and tools to say no.

Knowing Scripture helps us respond with power and peace when life gets tough.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What stands out to you about how Jesus handled temptation?
  • Why is it important to know God’s Word when we’re facing pressure?
  • What’s a common temptation teens face today, and how can Scripture help?

2. Bible Reading: Matthew 4:18–22

“Jesus said, ‘Come, follow me… and I will send you out to fish for people.’ At once they left their nets and followed him.”

Explanation For Teenagers

After facing temptation, Jesus started His mission—and He called others to join Him.

Following Jesus means leaving our old ways and stepping into a new purpose with Him.

He’s still inviting us today to follow with faith and boldness.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What might Jesus be asking you to “leave behind” to follow Him more fully?
  • Why do you think the disciples responded so quickly?
  • What does it look like for you to follow Jesus this week?

Youth Group Activity: “Temptation Toolbox”

What You’ll Need:

  • Index cards, pens, a small box or pouch

How to Do It:

  1. Each student writes down a Bible verse that helps them fight temptation.
  2. Put the cards in a small “toolbox” to keep as a reminder or carry with them.

Debrief

  • What verse stood out to you and why?
  • How can you be more prepared the next time temptation comes?

Closing Prayer

Jesus, thank You for showing us how to stand strong. Help us to remember Your truth and use it when we feel tempted or overwhelmed. Give us courage to follow You and strength to walk away from what isn’t right. In Your name, Amen.
