Sunday School Lesson: Loving Others When We Disagree – Romans 14:1-23

Introduction: Why This Matters for Teens

Teenagers live in a world full of opinions—social media debates, friend group drama, and pressure to pick sides. Even inside the church, people don’t always agree on everything. Romans 14 teaches teens how to handle disagreements with grace, humility, and love. This chapter shows that following Jesus means choosing unity over pride and loving people more than winning arguments.

What I’ve Learned about Loving Others When We Disagree

We often disagree on many things with almost everyone. In the world that we live in now, people try to take these things and make them the hill that they die on. Instead, as Christians, we should recognize that even in Christianity, we are going to disagree on many things with other believers, and that is ok. Not every issue is one where we must defend our view on it with our lives. Some issues we can agree to disagree on, like non-salvation issues. – Micah K

Bible Reading 1: Romans 14:1-4 (Accept One Another)

“Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Not every issue is a salvation issue: Some disagreements are about personal conviction.
  • God is the judge: We don’t get to decide someone else’s standing with God.
  • Grace builds unity: Acceptance strengthens the church.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • Why do disagreements turn into arguments so quickly?
  • What are some “disputable matters” teens argue about today?
  • Why is acceptance important in Christian community?

Bible Reading 2: Romans 14:5-9 (Living for the Lord)

“So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Jesus is the focus: Different practices can still honor the same Lord.
  • Faith is personal: Convictions grow at different speeds.
  • Belonging matters: Our lives are centered on Christ, not opinions.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • Why is it easy to judge someone with different convictions?
  • How does remembering “we belong to the Lord” change conflict?
  • What does it mean to live for Jesus as a teen?

Bible Reading 3: Romans 14:10-12 (Leave Judgment to God)

“So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • God sees the heart: We don’t know someone’s full story.
  • Judgment creates distance: Grace draws people closer.
  • Personal responsibility matters: Focus on your own walk with God.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • Why is judging others tempting?
  • How can judgment harm friendships?
  • What does focusing on your own faith look like?

Bible Reading 4: Romans 14:13-16 (Don’t Be a Stumbling Block)

“Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Freedom comes with responsibility: Love limits freedom.
  • Your choices influence others: Actions speak loudly.
  • Love protects: We care about how our actions affect others.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • How can our actions influence younger or newer believers?
  • Why is love more important than being “right”?
  • What does it mean to use freedom wisely?

Bible Reading 5: Romans 14:17-19 (What Really Matters)

“For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • God’s kingdom is deeper: It’s about hearts, not habits.
  • Peace and joy matter: Unity reflects Jesus.
  • Faith builds others up: Love strengthens community.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • Why do small issues feel big sometimes?
  • What brings peace to Christian friendships?
  • How can teens promote unity?

Bible Reading 6: Romans 14:20-23 (Faith and Conviction)

“Everything that does not come from faith is sin.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Convictions matter: God guides individuals differently.
  • Faith should bring peace: Guilt is not from God.
  • Love guides decisions: Faith works through love.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • How do you know if something is a conviction?
  • Why should faith bring peace, not pressure?
  • How does love guide wise decisions?

Youth Group Activity: “Agree to Disagree”

Objective: Teach teens to practice grace in disagreement.

Materials: Scenario cards (or verbal examples).

Instructions:

  1. Present common teen disagreements (music, social media, choices).
  2. Ask how to respond with grace instead of judgment.
  3. Discuss how love preserves unity.
  4. Pray for wisdom and humility.

Key Takeaways for Teens:

  • Not every disagreement needs a winner.
  • Love matters more than being right.
  • Freedom should always be guided by grace.
  • Unity reflects Jesus to the world.

Closing Prayer:

“Jesus, help us love others the way You love us. Teach us humility, patience, and grace when we disagree. Help us build unity instead of division and reflect Your heart in every relationship. Amen.”
