Introduction: Faith and Trust in Jesus

In Luke 7:1-10, we encounter a powerful story about a Roman centurion whose servant is on the brink of death. The centurion’s response to Jesus’ power and authority is a great example of faith. He believed that Jesus could heal his servant, even without physically being present. This passage teaches us a lot about the kind of faith Jesus is looking for in us—faith that trusts Him completely, even when we don’t see Him or understand how He works.

As teenagers, we often face moments where we don’t fully understand what’s going on or how things will turn out, whether it’s dealing with school, relationships, or future decisions. But this story reminds us that Jesus has the authority to heal and work in our lives in ways we might not expect. His power is greater than anything we can comprehend, and our faith in Him can move mountains.

Bible Reading 1: Luke 7:1-3

“When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • The centurion’s concern: Even though the centurion was a Roman soldier, he cared deeply for his servant. This shows us that Jesus cares about all people, no matter their background or status.
  • Seeking Jesus for help: The centurion didn’t try to solve the problem himself. He recognized his need for Jesus and reached out to Him. This is a lesson for us—when we face tough situations, we need to go to Jesus first.
  • Faith in Jesus’ ability to heal: The centurion heard about Jesus and believed that He could heal his servant. Just like the centurion, we need to have faith in Jesus’ power and ability to help us in our struggles.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • What does it mean that the centurion was concerned for his servant, even though he had a lot of power and authority?
  • When you’re facing challenges, do you tend to try to fix things on your own, or do you go to God for help first?
  • What areas in your life do you need to have more faith that Jesus can handle?

Bible Reading 2: Luke 7:4-8

“When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, ‘This man deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.’ So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: ‘Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, “Go,” and he goes; and that one, “Come,” and he comes. I say to my servant, “Do this,” and he does it.’”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • The centurion’s humility: Despite his position of power, the centurion humbly acknowledges that he is not worthy for Jesus to come into his house. His humility teaches us that, no matter how much we achieve or how high our status, we need to approach Jesus with humility.
  • Understanding authority: The centurion understood authority. He knew that Jesus had the ultimate authority to heal, just as he himself had authority over his soldiers. This shows us that true faith recognizes Jesus’ authority in our lives, believing that He can do what seems impossible.
  • Faith in Jesus’ power without being present: The centurion trusted that Jesus didn’t need to be physically present to heal his servant. This level of faith is what Jesus is looking for in us—to believe in His power, even when we don’t see Him working directly in our lives.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • Why do you think the centurion felt unworthy for Jesus to come to his house? How does this reflect his heart?
  • What does the centurion’s understanding of authority teach us about how we should trust Jesus to work in our lives?
  • Is there something in your life where you need to trust that Jesus can act even without you seeing it happening?

Bible Reading 3: Luke 7:9-10

“When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, ‘I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.’ Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Jesus is amazed by faith: Jesus was amazed at the centurion’s faith. In all of Israel, He hadn’t found anyone with such a deep trust in His authority and power. Jesus wants us to have that kind of faith—faith that trusts in Him fully, no matter the circumstances.
  • Faith leads to healing: Because of the centurion’s faith, his servant was healed. Jesus rewards faith, and when we trust Him, we open ourselves up to His work in our lives.
  • The power of Jesus’ word: Jesus didn’t need to be there physically. His word alone had the power to heal. This is a reminder of how powerful Jesus is and how we should rely on His word in every part of our lives.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • Why do you think Jesus was so amazed by the centurion’s faith? How does this encourage you to trust Jesus more?
  • In what areas of your life do you need to have more faith in Jesus’ power, even when you don’t see the results immediately?
  • How can you rely on Jesus’ word in your everyday life?

Youth Group Game: “Faith Relay”

Objective: To build trust and demonstrate faith in action.

Materials Needed: Blindfolds, Small obstacles (chairs, cones, etc.)

Instructions:

  1. Set up a small obstacle course.
  2. Blindfold one person from each team.
  3. The rest of the team members will direct the blindfolded person through the obstacle course by giving clear verbal instructions.
  4. The game will represent how we trust in Jesus, even when we don’t see the way ahead of us. The blindfolded person has to rely completely on the instructions (faith) of their teammates (symbolizing Jesus’ guidance).

Discussion After the Game:

  • How did it feel to trust your teammates to guide you through the course?
  • How does this relate to trusting Jesus to guide you, even when you can’t see the outcome?
  • In what areas of your life can you take a step of faith and trust that Jesus will guide you?

Closing Prayer:

“Jesus, thank You for showing us what true faith looks like through the centurion. Help us to trust You with everything in our lives, even when we don’t understand how things will turn out. We ask for the kind of faith that believes in Your power, even when we can’t see it. May we always seek Your guidance and trust in Your word. In Your name, Amen.”
