Print Friendly and PDF

As teenagers navigating through the complexities of life, it’s essential to understand our identity and purpose. The world bombards us with countless messages about who we should be, but true fulfillment comes from understanding our worth in God’s eyes. Psalm 139 beautifully captures this truth, reminding us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made by our Creator.

In this Sunday school lesson, we will explore Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18 and reflect on how understanding our identity in God can strengthen our faith and shape our lives.

Bible Reading: Psalm 139:1-6

  • Read aloud Psalm 139:1-6 from a contemporary translation like the New Living Translation (NLT).

Explanation:

  • As we read in verse 1, God knows everything about us. He knows our thoughts, our actions, and even the words we haven’t spoken yet. This shows the intimate relationship God desires with us.
  • In verses 2-3, we see that God not only knows us completely but is also present with us at all times. There is nowhere we can go where God’s presence cannot reach us.
  • Verses 4-6 highlight the depth of God’s knowledge. Even before we speak, God knows what we will say. He knows us better than we know ourselves.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  1. How does it make you feel to know that God knows everything about you?
  2. Why is it comforting to know that God is always present with us?
  3. In what ways can understanding God’s knowledge of us impact our daily lives?

Bible Reading: Psalm 139:13-18

  • Read aloud Psalm 139:13-18 from a contemporary translation like the New International Version (NIV).

Explanation:

  • In these verses, we witness the psalmist’s awe at how God intricately formed us in our mother’s womb. Our creation is not a random event but a deliberate act of the Creator’s love and purpose.
  • The psalmist acknowledges that every day of our lives was written in God’s book before we were even born. This reminds us that our lives have meaning and purpose in God’s grand plan.
  • Verses 17-18 express the psalmist’s wonder at the magnitude of God’s thoughts towards us. His thoughts are precious and vast, and they outnumber the grains of sand by the sea.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  1. How does knowing that God intentionally formed you in your mother’s womb impact your self-image and confidence?
  2. In what ways can understanding that our lives have purpose in God’s plan influence the choices we make?
  3. How does it feel to know that God’s thoughts towards us are precious and countless?

Youth Group Game: “Identity Charades”

In this game, students will take turns acting out different aspects of their identity. They can portray hobbies, dreams, skills, or anything that makes them who they are. The rest of the group will guess what aspect of their identity they are portraying.

This game encourages students to reflect on their unique qualities and understand that their identity goes beyond superficial labels.

Closing Prayer:

Dear God,

We thank you for creating us fearfully and wonderfully. Help us embrace our identity in you and recognize our worth. Guide us as we navigate through life, always aware of your presence and purpose for us. May we trust in your love and live according to your plans. In Jesus’ name, amen.
