Youth Ministry Lesson on Hebrews 7:23-28: Forever on Your Side

Print Friendly and PDF

Hey everyone! Here’s a question to think about—how do you feel when someone has your back? Maybe it’s a teammate who helps you out in a game or a good friend who supports you when things get tough. Now imagine someone who not only has your back but also stands up for you every day, no matter what—someone who’s on your team forever.

That’s exactly what Jesus does for us! Today, we’re talking about Hebrews 7, where we learn about Jesus as our eternal high priest. That might sound like a fancy title, but it basically means He’s the ultimate go-between for us and God. Unlike the priests from Old Testament times who had temporary roles, Jesus is forever, and He’s perfect at it!

Here’s why this matters for you—knowing Jesus is on your side can completely change how you live. His life, death, and resurrection mean that nothing can separate you from God when you trust Him. Let’s explore what that means and how it impacts your faith!

📖 Bible Reading #1 – Hebrews 7:23-25

“Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.”

🔍 Explanation

  • A Forever Priest: Back in Old Testament times, priests would make sacrifices to bring people closer to God. But these priests were human, so they eventually passed away, and someone else had to take over. Jesus, though, lives forever. His role doesn’t end.
  • Complete Salvation: Jesus doesn’t just save a little—He saves completely. His death and resurrection made it possible for us to be in a relationship with God forever.
  • Always Interceding: This means Jesus is always praying for us, standing in the gap between us and God. He’s cheering us on and helping us stay close to God.

🤔 Discussion Questions

  1. Why is it important that Jesus’s priesthood is permanent?
  2. What do you think it means that Jesus “saves completely”?
  3. How does it make you feel to know Jesus is always interceding (praying) for you?

📖 Bible Reading #2 – Hebrews 7:26-28

“Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.”

🔍 Explanation

  • Jesus Meets Our Need: He’s everything we need—a perfect, holy, and sinless high priest who bridges the gap between us and God.
  • One Ultimate Sacrifice: Old Testament priests had to offer sacrifices daily because people kept sinning (and the priests sinned too!). Jesus offered Himself once for all. His sacrifice on the cross was enough to cover all sin, for all time.
  • Perfect Forever: Human priests had weaknesses, but Jesus is perfect and eternal. He never fails, and His role as our mediator will never end.

🤔 Discussion Questions

  1. What stood out to you about how Jesus is different from other priests?
  2. Why is it significant that Jesus’s sacrifice was “once for all”?
  3. How does knowing Jesus sacrificed Himself for you personally affect your view of Him?

🎉 Youth Group Game – “Intercede for Your Team”

Objective:

This game will help students understand how Jesus intercedes for us while practicing teamwork.

How to Play:

  1. Divide the group into two teams.
  2. Set up an obstacle course with items to jump over, crawl under, or weave through. Each team sends one player at a time to go through it.
  3. Here’s the twist—each person has a “support teammate” who stands on the sidelines and gives encouragement, cheerleading them through the course.
  4. After everyone has gone, debrief the activity.

Debrief After the Game

  • How did it feel to have someone cheering you on and guiding you?
  • Did it make the course easier to handle?
  • Think about how Jesus is constantly “cheering us on,” interceding for us with God.

Discussion Questions after the game:

  • How can we rely on Jesus’s help in our lives, just like you relied on your teammate’s encouragement?
  • What are some ways you can “stand in the gap” and pray for friends or family this week, like Jesus does for us?

🛠️ Reflect and Apply

  • Write down an area of your life where you feel like you can’t “make it through the course.” Invite Jesus to intercede for you there, asking Him for strength and guidance.
  • This week, think about one person in your life who needs encouragement or prayer. Commit to praying for them every day, just like Jesus prays for us.
  • Remember, Jesus isn’t just a savior from the past—He’s active in your life right now. Lean on Him!

🙏 Closing Prayer

“Lord Jesus, thank You for being our forever high priest. Thank You for sacrificing Yourself for us once and for all, so we can be close to God. We’re so grateful that You never stop interceding for us and cheering us on each day. Help us to trust in You more, knowing You’re always on our side. Teach us to pray for others, just as You pray for us. We love You, and we want to follow You with our whole hearts. Amen.”

This week, remember that Jesus is more than someone we read about in church—He’s alive, active, and ready to help you every step of the way. With His perfect love and constant intercession, there’s nothing you can’t face! Trust Him, lean on Him, and keep growing in your faith. </Content>
