Introduction: Why Forgiveness Matters for Teens
Forgiveness can be one of the hardest things we’re asked to do, especially when we feel hurt or wronged. But as followers of Jesus, we’re called to forgive—not just for others’ sake, but for our own. Forgiveness helps us let go of anger, free ourselves from bitterness, and experience God’s peace. This lesson helps us understand what forgiveness really means and how it’s a powerful way to grow closer to God.

Bible Reading 1: Matthew 6:14-15
“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”
Explanation for Teenagers
- Jesus teaches that forgiveness is essential—it’s not just a suggestion but a way to live in relationship with God.
- Forgiveness doesn’t mean forgetting or saying that what happened was okay; it’s a choice to let go of anger and bitterness.
- When we forgive others, we make room in our hearts for God’s peace and healing.
Youth Group Discussion Questions
- Why do you think Jesus places such importance on forgiveness?
- What makes it hard to forgive others when they hurt us?
- How can forgiving others bring us closer to God?
Bible Reading 2: Ephesians 4:31-32
“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
Explanation for Teenagers
- Paul encourages us to let go of negative emotions that hold us back from forgiving others.
- Forgiveness is about replacing anger and bitterness with kindness and compassion, modeling the forgiveness God has given us through Jesus.
- It’s not about pretending everything’s okay, but choosing to let go so we don’t carry the weight of anger in our hearts.
Youth Group Discussion Questions
- What emotions do you hold onto when you’re struggling to forgive?
- How does holding onto anger affect your relationships with others?
- In what ways can showing compassion help us forgive more easily?
Bible Reading 3: Colossians 3:13
“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
Explanation for Teenagers
- Forgiveness is a way to follow God’s example since He has already forgiven us.
- Holding grudges is exhausting, but forgiveness allows us to let go and move forward.
- Choosing to forgive doesn’t mean we ignore our feelings; it means we choose not to let them control us.
Youth Group Discussion Questions
- What does it mean to “forgive as the Lord forgave you”?
- Is there someone you need to forgive, or maybe someone you need to ask for forgiveness from?
- How can forgiveness bring peace to our hearts and minds?
2. Youth Group Game: “Let It Go” Relay
- Objective: Help students experience the idea of letting go of grudges or anger in a fun way.
- Setup: Set up a relay course with different stations. Each student or team carries a bag with small weights (representing grudges) they have to drop at each station.
- Instructions:
- Divide students into teams, and give each team a “baggage” bag filled with small weights.
- As they go through the relay, each team member drops one weight at each station, symbolizing letting go of something heavy.
- At the end, discuss how it felt to carry the bag at first and how it felt when they were able to “let go” of the weight.
- Debrief Questions:
- How did it feel to carry the weight at the beginning of the game?
- Did you feel a difference as you let go of more weights?
- How is this game similar to letting go of grudges or forgiving someone?
3. Closing Prayer
“Lord, thank You for forgiving us and showing us how to forgive others. Help us to let go of anger and bitterness, so we can make room for Your love and peace in our hearts. Give us the strength to forgive others, even when it’s difficult, and remind us that forgiveness is a gift that frees us. Teach us to follow Your example and to live in peace with others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
This lesson encourages teens to explore forgiveness and understand it as a gift that brings healing, peace, and freedom. By choosing forgiveness, they can experience the love of God in a deeper way and let go of anything that holds them back.
