Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why True Confidence Matters

In today’s world, confidence is often measured by appearance, popularity, or success. But God has a different way of seeing us—He knows our value and calls us His children. True confidence isn’t about how others see us but about knowing who we are in Christ. This lesson helps teens discover that their identity is found in God and that their value doesn’t depend on other people’s opinions or approval. Understanding this can bring real confidence that lasts through life’s ups and downs.

1. Bible Reading & Teaching

Bible Reading 1: Psalm 139:13-14

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

Explanation for Teenagers

  • God created each one of us uniquely and with care; He knows us inside and out.
  • Our worth doesn’t come from what we do, how we look, or what others think of us. It comes from the fact that God designed us with purpose and love.
  • Real confidence is knowing we are valued simply because God made us.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What do you think it means to be “fearfully and wonderfully made”?
  • How does this verse challenge what the world says about beauty or worth?
  • What could change if you believed this about yourself every day?

Bible Reading 2: Ephesians 2:10

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

Explanation for Teenagers

  • God calls us His “handiwork” or masterpiece, which means He put thought and intention into creating each of us.
  • Our lives have purpose because God has planned things specifically for us to do.
  • Knowing we’re God’s creation and that He has a purpose for us gives us confidence to step into each day with courage.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • How does it make you feel to be called God’s masterpiece?
  • What do you think God might have “prepared in advance” for you to do?
  • How can remembering this verse help you when you feel insecure?

Bible Reading 3: 1 Samuel 16:7

“The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

Explanation for Teenagers

  • While people tend to focus on appearances and achievements, God is interested in what’s on the inside—our heart, our character, and our faith.
  • God’s opinion of us isn’t based on looks, status, or abilities. He values who we are on the inside.
  • True confidence is about being secure in what God sees in us, not what people see.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • How is God’s view of us different from what people usually focus on?
  • Why do you think it’s hard to ignore people’s opinions and focus on God’s view?
  • What are some ways you can remind yourself of God’s view of you this week?

2. Youth Group Game: “Identity Match-Up”

  • Objective: Reinforce the idea that our identity and confidence should be rooted in God’s view of us, not in superficial labels.
  • Setup: Write various positive identity traits (e.g., “Child of God,” “Loved,” “Forgiven,” “Purposeful,” “Strong in Faith”) on slips of paper and place them in a basket or bowl. Also, include slips with common worldly labels teens might feel pressured by, such as “Popular,” “Successful,” “Attractive,” “Rich,” “Talented.”
  • Instructions:
  1. Have each teen pull a slip from the basket.
  2. If they pull a worldly label, they should share how it might make them feel temporarily confident or insecure.
  3. If they pull a God-given identity trait, they should share why it gives lasting confidence.
  4. End by discussing how God’s view of us is more valuable and lasting than any label the world can give.
  • Debrief Questions:
  • Which labels felt like they carried real value, and which felt temporary?
  • How can remembering God’s view of you help when you feel insecure?
  • What’s one God-given trait you want to hold onto this week?

3. Closing Prayer

“Lord, thank You for creating us with intention, love, and purpose. Remind us each day that our confidence and worth are found in You, not in what others say or see. Help us to see ourselves as You see us—unique, valuable, and loved. Give us the courage to live with confidence that comes from knowing we are Your children. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

This lesson encourages teens to base their confidence in who God says they are, rather than in the opinions of others. By focusing on their identity in Christ, they can develop lasting confidence and see themselves as God sees them—fearfully and wonderfully made with purpose and love.
