Lesson Intro: The Importance of Fatherhood

We are taking a break from our regular lessons to celebrate and understand the importance of Father’s Day. In our society, the role of a father is often overlooked or underrated, but the Bible presents a beautiful picture of fatherhood. Fathers are portrayed as strong leaders, caring protectors, and compassionate providers. Father’s Day gives us an opportunity to appreciate the male figures in our lives who have helped guide us, whether they’re our biological fathers, spiritual fathers, mentors, or role models.

For many teenagers, the concept of fatherhood can bring mixed emotions, and that’s okay. Today, we’ll explore what the Bible says about fathers, their responsibilities, and how God models perfect fatherhood. This isn’t just about understanding our earthly fathers better but also about growing in our relationship with our heavenly Father.

Father’s Day Sunday School Lesson for Teenagers

Bible Reading: Ephesians 6:1-4

Let’s kick off with our first Bible reading:

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’—which is the first commandment with a promise—’so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.’ Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” (Ephesians 6:1-4, NIV)

Points of Explanation for Teenagers

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  1. What does it mean to honor your father and mother? How can you do this practically?
  2. How does this commandment relate to your relationship with your Heavenly Father?
  3. Can you think of ways that your father or a father-figure has guided you in the training and instruction of the Lord?

Youth Group Game: Father Figure Charades

Now, let’s lighten up a bit with a fun and relevant game. In this game, everyone will write down one thing they appreciate about their father or a father-figure on a piece of paper. Then we’ll take turns acting out these attributes without speaking, and others will guess what the action is. This game will not only be fun but also help us reflect on the positive impacts these men have had in our lives.

Bible Reading: Proverbs 3:11-12

Our second Bible reading is from Proverbs:

“My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.” (Proverbs 3:11-12, NIV)

Bible Explanation for Teenagers

Youth Ministry Discussion Questions:

  1. Can you share an instance where discipline from your father or a father figure helped you grow?
  2. How do you respond to God’s discipline in your life?
  3. What can we learn about God’s character from the way He disciplines us?

Closing Prayer

As we come to the close of today’s lesson, let’s unite in prayer:

“Dear Heavenly Father, we thank You for this day dedicated to honoring fathers. We’re grateful for the father figures You have placed in our lives who guide us, protect us, and love
